If there's one thing that post-grad life has taught me is that I need routines. In fact, I thrive when I have a routine or plan for the day versus doing things randomly. Routines are essential as they can improve productivity while reducing stress and decision fatigue. Now there are all sorts of routines that we can talk about, from daily routines, skincare routines, Self-Care Sunday routines...
But one routine that I generally can't live without is my morning routine. Having an intentional morning routine (whether slow or productive) can truly help you to set the tone for the day.
The Power of a Consistent Routine.
Establishing a routine offers numerous benefits that contribute to improved mental, physical, and emotional well-being. First, let's talk about mental health: having a predictable routine provides a sense of control and stability which can ultimately reduce stress and anxiety. Routines can also help you build consistent mental health/self-care practices. For example, every morning I try to journal for 20 minutes to promote emotional balance.
Another great benefit of having a routine is increased productivity! One thing I've loved about post-grad life is the flexibility and ample free time, but having a structured routine has helped me make the most of it. By managing my time better and reducing procrastination, I've been able to work toward both short- and long-term goals—like consistently waking up early and starting my day on the right foot.
Finally, a well-thought-out routine can enhance your work-life balance. Setting clear boundaries between work and personal time not only prevents burnout but also creates more space for relaxation and enjoyment. This can translate into more free time for hobbies, social activities, or simply unwinding without guilt.
Now, let's dive into my step-by-step morning routine*.
*Keep in mind, my mornings don’t always follow this exact structure—I listen to my body and adjust as needed, whether that means taking it slow or allowing myself to rest.
My Step-by-Step Morning Routine (with timestamps).
1. Wake up early (6:00 - 6:30 AM): Start your day with intention by waking up early to give yourself time before the world wakes up. Waking up early allows you to begin the day calmly, without rushing. This extra time gives you a head start and sets a productive tone for the rest of your day.
2. Exercise (6:30 - 7:00 AM): Get your body moving for at least 30 minutes. This can include a workout, a brisk walk, or stretching. Physical activity releases endorphins, boosts your energy, and improves focus. Exercising in the morning helps you build momentum and increases mental clarity for the day ahead.

3. Shower + Skincare (7:00 - 7:20 AM): A refreshing shower helps wake up your body and clear your mind. Follow it with your skincare routine to hydrate and take care of your skin. This gives you a clean, refreshed feeling and signals to your body that it's time to take on the day.
4. Pick out your clothes the night before (7:20 - 7:30 AM): Choose your outfit the night before to save time and reduce decision fatigue. This simple step ensures that you start the day stress-free, without having to worry about what to wear.
I work from home, so a cute, comfy set will always be my go-to! This grey set is from Walmart for under $25.
5. 20-minute wellness and spiritual activity (7:30 - 7:50 AM): Spend 20 minutes engaging in a wellness activity such as meditation, journaling, or visualization. Meditation helps calm the mind and prepare it for the challenges of the day. Journaling can be used for setting intentions, noting your goals, or practicing gratitude - The Five Minute Journal is a great beginner-friendly journal! This time helps you center yourself and boosts mental clarity.
Spending time with God is also another way of how I enjoy an intentional morning. The She Reads Truth Bible and this devotional are my essential items for strengthening my relationship with God.
6. Breakfast + Coffee (7:50 - 8:20 AM): Fuel your body with a nutritious breakfast and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. A healthy breakfast provides essential nutrients to start your day right, while caffeine (in moderation) can help improve focus and alertness. Choose whole foods like oatmeal, eggs, fruit, or smoothies for sustained energy.

7. Gather your workday essentials (8:20 - 8:30 AM): Organize everything you’ll need for the day, including your planner, to-do list, and any work materials. Taking a moment to gather your essentials ensures you're prepared and minimizes stress when it's time to dive into your tasks. Use a daily planner to prioritize your top 3 tasks and map out your goals.
My workday essentials include my MacBook laptop, aesthetic laptop case, coffee in my ribbed glassware, and my daily planner. These items can be found on my Amazon storefront.
8. Review your to-do list & set priorities (8:30 - 8:40 AM): Quickly review your to-do list and set clear priorities for the day. Identify the most important tasks that need your focus and attention, and break down larger projects into manageable steps. This step helps you stay organized and focused throughout the day.
9. Start your first task (8:40 - 8:45 AM): Dive straight into your most important task for the day. Avoid distractions by turning off notifications or setting a timer. Tackling your first task with focus helps you gain momentum, making it easier to move through the rest of your to-do list.
By following this routine, you set a solid foundation for a productive day. Each step works in synergy to promote both physical and mental well-being, ensuring you're prepared and focused for whatever comes your way. Please feel free to tailor this routine to your desired schedule and lifestyle.
Have a productive morning!
